The new harbour accommodates a fishing fleet that catches various commercial sport fish species, including kabeljou, yellowtail, geelbek, elf (shad), Garrick (leervis), galjoen (South Africa's national fish), red roman, snoek, kingklip, and sole. It is a hub for South Africa’s abalone industry. Abalone, growing to about 5-9 inches, struggles to reproduce sufficiently, making its population vulnerable. Its commercial value has led to rampant poaching, resulting in a considerable illegal market for abalone, often referred to as "white gold."
