Half Day Guided Game Drive in the Addo Elephant National Park

You will begin your day with an early breakfast before heading to Addo National Park for a half-day guided game drive with an experienced ranger, complete with drinks and snacks. Established in 1931 to protect the 11 remaining Cape or Addo elephants from extinction, Addo Elephant National Park has grown from its 2,000 hectares to approximately 180,000 hectares (1,800 km²) of diverse bushveld, plus an additional 180,000 hectares including marine areas. The park is home to over 600 elephants—four times the density found in Kruger National Park—along with 400 Cape buffalo, 48 black rhinos, and various antelope species It features the 'Big 7'—the Big 5 plus the Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark—making it the only park in South Africa where you can search all these iconic animals. Initially, the park covered 7,000 hectares, but the lack of fencing allowed elephants to raid neighboring farms. After unsuccessful attempts with electrified fencing, ranger Graham Armstrong proposed using old lift cables and tram rails. An experimental fence built in 1951 proved successful, leading to the establishment of a 2,500-hectare fenced area for exclusive elephant use, with materials donated by public companies. In addition to elephants, the reserve is home to many other mammals, including nocturnal aardvarks, duikers, caracals, bushbuck, and kudu. The Cape buffaloes here are particularly noteworthy, having adapted from daytime grazing herds to solitary night browsers. East African black rhinoceros is another threatened species thriving in the reserve, which also hosts over 150 bird species, from ostriches to raptors and waterfowl.

After your safari, you'll return to your accommodation for a lunch and some free time to relax or participate in optional activities, such as a cultural tour or an afternoon safari (note that these optional activities are not included and come at an extra cost). In the evening, you will visit a popular restaurant to sample regional delicacies before heading back to your accommodation for a restful night.

Known for its abundance of seashells Jeffreys Bay's beaches are among the most prolific the African coast. This sought holiday destination boasts nearly 5 kilometers of breathtaking beach from the Keurbooms River to the resort itself, but swimming is not recommended due to unpredictable rip tides. Originally named ‘Bahia das Alagoas’ by Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias in 1488, it was later called ‘Bahia Formosa’ (the Beautiful Bay) by Manuel de Mesquita de Perestrello in 1576, thanks to its stunning blue waters and golden sands. In 1778, Baron van Plettenberg named the bay after himself, a name that became official with the formation of a village council. You’ll then head to Knysna for lunch and a tour of the Knysna Heads. Significant development in Knysna began in 1804 with the arrival of English exile George Rex, and its vibrant history includes sailing ships, timber extraction, and a gold rush, serving as a harbor town from 1817 to 1854 before being officially established in 1882. After lunch, return to your accommodation to check in and enjoy dinner around 19:00.

Mossel Bay, Bartolomeu Dias Caravel and Post Office Tree

After breakfast, you'll journey to Mossel Bay, the site where it all began. On February 2, 1488, the first European landed on South African soil at what is now Munro’s Bay, part of the greater Mossel Bay area. During a storm, Dias rounded the Cape and, upon sighting land, went ashore near the Gouritz River for fresh water, marking the location as ‘the watering place of St Blaize’ on the saint’s day, February 3. Originally named 'Arguada de Sao Bras' (watering place of St Blaize) by Dias, it was renamed Mossel Bay in 1601 when Dutch mariner Paulus van Caerden discovered large collection of mussel shells (mossels) in a cave at Cape St Blaize. You'll also see a full replica of the Bartolomeu Dias caravel, known for its ability to sail into the wind and discover what we now call Mossel Bay. After lunch, you'll visit the Post Office Tree, a Milkwood Tree that is now a national monument, which served as a postal service connection between ships. You'll then return to your accommodation for dinner and a restful night.

After breakfast, you'll check out and head to Riversdale for a wine tasting accompanied by a light platter lunch. Next, you'll travel to Swellendam, which, along with Tulbagh ranks as the third oldest town in South Africa, following Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Renowned for its stunning 14 km stretch of white sandy beach—the longest in the Southern Hemisphere—Struisbaai is a small fishing town. After checking into your accommodation, take some time to relax before enjoying dinner, after which you'll return to lodging. Optional activities at an additional cost include a whale watching boat cruise at the tip of Africa. (During the off-whale season from December to May, you can enjoy a boat cruise instead.)

Cape Agulhas the Southernmost Tip of the African Continent, Hermanus Tour and Cape Town

This 7.5 million candlepower beacon serves as a vital guide for seafarers and houses a tearoom and museum. You will then travel to Hermanus, known as the Whale Capital of South Africa. Nestled on Walker Bay,us is celebrated for its Whale Route, where Southern Right Whales migrate for birthing and mating from July to November. The Old Harbour, a national monument, and has a great land-based whale watching platforms for safely observing these majestic giants, alongside art galleries and outstanding seafood restaurants. The new harbour accommodates a fishing fleet that catches various commercial sport fish species, including kabeljou, yellowtail, geelbek, elf (shad), Garrick (leervis), galjoen (South Africa's national fish), red roman, snoek, kingklip, and sole. It is a hub for South Africa’s abalone industry. Abalone, growing to about 5-9 inches, struggles to reproduce sufficiently, making its population vulnerable. Its commercial value has led to rampant poaching, resulting in a considerable illegal market for abalone, often referred to as "white gold." Although the abalone industry in South Africa is heavily regulated, protecting it from poaching remains a significant challenge. Afterward, you'll continue your journey to the Mother City, stopping along the way to take breathtaking ocean views. Once you check in, you'll have time to relax before enjoying dinner at the hotel around 1900.

Then, you'll visit Long Street and Signal Hill before taking the cable car to the summit of Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Standing at 1,086 meters and made of Malmesbury shale, Table Mountain sandstone and Cape granite, Table Mountain is 600 million years old, making it six times older than Everest and five times older than the Rockies. As part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and a UNESCO Heritage site, Table Mountain itself boasts nearly 1,500 species—more than the entire United Kingdom. Cape Floral Kingdom coves less than 5% of South Africa, bit it is home to over 40% of the nation's plants, making it the world's smallest floral kingdom with more than 9,000 plant species, about 70% of which are endemic. The unique fynbos vegetation, a scrubland that thrives on periodic fires, characterises the area. Stretching across the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, the Cape Floral Kingdom extends from the Clanwilliam area in the Western Cape to Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape.  You can use the opportunity to take a a breath-taking helicopter flight over the Waterfront, City Bowl, Clifton, Camps Bay, Table Mountain, and beyond. Alternatively, you can enjoy a thrilling ride on the authentic American Army Bell HU-1 Huey, gliding low over the waves along the beaches of Big Bay and Melkbos with the wind in your hair. Clients can choose to fly with the doors open or closed. (this activity is available upon request for an additional cost).
